Nick Milner
Artist's Statement
I am a painter and often use the oil glazing techniques of the Masters. I paint Suffolk
landscapes, people and sometimes people in landscapes.
CV
I studied art at school with Ron Smoothey and Frank Browne (both ex-Slade). I was
offered a deferred place at the Royal College of Art (M.Des) after my first degree
but instead went to the University of Nottingham where I completed a PhD. Since resuming
painting my best known works are the twist on Vermeer’s “A maid asleep” (2006) and
a modern version of Gainsborough’s portrait of the Ipswich MP, William Wollaten.
My version puts Justin Hawkins, front-man for the Suffolk band the Darkness, into
Gainsborough’s picture. “A likeness of the Darkness” was acquired by Christchurch
Mansion in 2007.
