George William Gill

Artist's Statement

To keep pushing at the boundaries of my work, I like to change media from time to time, as this keeps my work fresh and helps to retain the excitement and joy of discovery, like working directly from the subject.

CV

1970's
Studied painting and drawing in Sheffield, Oxford and St. Albans, and illustration at Watford College of Art and Design.
Preferring to experiment and explore the possibilities of using different media, I didn't pursue a career in illustration.

1980's
Work became more figurative after moving to the country in 1985.

1990's
Began taking on commissions for landscapes and portraits. Sales started to increase through annual exhibitions and galleries. I took on fewer commissions, in order to concentrate on my own ideas and push my work forward.

2000
Sent work to the Mall Galleries for the first time and exhibited at the annual exhibitions of The Royal Society of Marine Artists, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Pastel Society.
First recipient of the "John Godden Award" for best painting at the Hertford Art Society Annual members show.

2001
ROI 'WINSOR AND NEWTON' Award for Outstanding Work at ROI ( Royal Society of Oil Painters) Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London.

2003
LYNNE TAIT GALLERY Award for Best Work Depicting a Local Landmark at 45th Essex Open Exhibition, Beecroft Gallery.

2004
Two paintings submitted and selected for the "NEAC" (NEW ENGLISH ART CLUB) Exhibition 2004 at the Mall Galleries, London.
